Why Do We Light Diyas During Diwali?
Every Diwali, homes shine with beautiful diyas. Families make colorful rangoli, decorate their doors with flowers, and enjoy delicious sweets.

But do you know why we light diyas on Diwali? The answer lies in a beautiful story about Lord Ram!
There is a special story behind these little lights. It began a long, long time ago in Ayodhya.
Lord Ram's Long Journey
One day, Ram left his palace to spend 14 years in the forest. His wife, Sita, and brother, Lakshman, went with him. Their journey was full of challenges.

Life in the forest was not easy. One day, the evil king Ravan took Sita away to Lanka!
Ram was determined to bring her back.
With the help of Hanuman and his brave army, Ram fought Ravan, defeated him, and rescued Sita.
Finally, after 14 long years, Ram, Sita, and Lakshman were ready to return to Ayodhya!
A Big Surprise in Ayodhya
When the people of Ayodhya heard that Ram was coming home, they were filled with joy!
Their beloved prince was finally returning, and everyone wanted to give him a wonderful welcome.
But there was one problem.
It was a dark night!
There were no electric lights or streetlights in those days. How could the people make their city bright and beautiful for Ram?

Then someone had a wonderful idea!
Thousands of Diyas Light Up the Night
The people brought out small clay lamps called diyas. They filled them with oil, placed cotton wicks inside, and lit them.
One diya glowed.
Then another.
And another!

Soon, thousands of diyas were shining across Ayodhya!
The streets, houses, and palace were filled with beautiful little lights. The whole city looked magical!
People sang happy songs, decorated their homes with flowers, and waited excitedly.
And finally, Lord Ram, Sita, and Lakshman arrived!
Everyone cheered with joy. After 14 long years, their beloved prince was finally home!
Why Do We Light Diyas Today?
According to a popular tradition, people lit diyas to celebrate Lord Ram's return to Ayodhya.
Even today, we light diyas during Diwali to remember that happy day.

But these little lights also have a special meaning.
A diya reminds us that light can remove darkness, just as goodness can overcome evil. It also reminds us to spread love, hope, and kindness.
So, the next time you light a diya on Diwali, remember the happy people of Ayodhya welcoming Lord Ram home!
