The Mystery of Ganesha’s Broken Tusk

Have you ever wondered why Lord Ganesha has only one full tusk?

Long ago, Ganesha had two beautiful tusks. But one day, he broke one of them himself!

Why would Ganesha do such a thing?

The answer is hidden in a very special story.

One day, the great sage Ved Vyasa wanted to write the Mahabharata, a long story filled with kings, heroes, and important lessons.

Sage Ved Vyasa speaks to young Lord Ganesha outside a peaceful forest hermitage, asking for his help in writing the Mahabharata.

But he needed someone who could write as fast as he spoke.

So, he asked Lord Ganesha for help.

Ganesha happily agreed, but he had one condition.

"You must tell the story without stopping," Ganesha said.

Ved Vyasa smiled and replied, "And you must understand every word before writing it."

Ganesha agreed.

Soon, Ved Vyasa began telling the story, and Ganesha started writing.

His pen moved quickly across the pages.

The story went on and on.

Lord Ganesha writes the Mahabharata while Sage Ved Vyasa tells the story.

The Tusk That Saved the Story

Suddenly, something unexpected happened!

SNAP!

Ganesha's pen broke!

But Ved Vyasa was still speaking.

Ganesha looked at his broken pen.

"What should I do now?" he wondered.

Lord Ganesha looks worried as his pen breaks while Sage Ved Vyasa continues telling the Mahabharata.

He had promised to keep writing without stopping.

Then Ganesha had an idea!

Without wasting a moment, he gently broke off one of his own tusks.

He picked it up and used it as a pen!

Lord Ganesha writes the Mahabharata with his broken tusk while Sage Ved Vyasa watches in surprise.

SCRATCH! SCRATCH! SCRATCH!

Ganesha continued writing the Mahabharata.

Not a single important word was lost.

Ved Vyasa was deeply touched by Ganesha's dedication and selflessness.

At last, the great story was completed.

From that day, Ganesha had only one full tusk.

That is why he became known as Ekdant, or Ekadanta.

Ek means one, and Dant means tooth or tusk.

So, Ekdant means "the one with a single tusk."

His broken tusk became a symbol of wisdom, determination, and selflessness.

And whenever we see Lord Ganesha with one tusk, we remember how he used it to complete an important task.

That is the wonderful story of how Lord Ganesha earned the name Ekdant — the One-Tusked Lord!
